Dr. Charles Perniciaro was born and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned an Honors Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, then obtained his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Following an internship in Lafayette, Louisiana, Dr. Perniciaro completed a dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic, later returning to Mayo for his dermatopathology fellowship. He is board certified in both dermatology and dermatopathology, and he voluntarily took and passed the dermatology board recertification examination in 2011.

Dr. Perniciaro has had a long and distinguished career in both academic medicine and private practice, including serving as the Director of Dermatopathology at Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. Perniciaro has been a member of the faculty at several medical schools, including Mayo, Tulane University, and Louisiana State University. He is currently Clinical Courtesy Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Perniciaro has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and serves on the Board of Editors of the American Journal of Dermatopathology. Dr. Perniciaro is listed in "Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare" and has been featured in "Best Doctors®" since 1999. In 2009, The Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery recognized Dr. Perniciaro as the state's "Practitioner of the Year", and in 2017 the Society selected Dr. Perniciaro for their inaugural "Excellence in Dermatopathology" award.
